Chief Executive Officer

The former Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, Marcia Fowler serves as the CEO of Bournewood Health Systems. She has extensive expertise in clinical programs, human service management, and budget experience in both the public and private sectors, including more than 18 years of service with the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health. A lawyer and a clinician, Fowler is a committed advocate for adults, children, adolescents, and families whose lives are affected by serious mental illness, emotional disturbance, and substance use conditions. Her work in the human services sector reaches across many disciplines and includes experience in direct care and supervisory roles with agencies and organizations such as the Department of Developmental Disabilities, Fernald State School, New England Home for Little Wanderers, Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries, the Foundation for Children with AIDS, and Polaris Healthcare Services.

Mona Bastide, LICSW

Chief Operating Officer

Mona Bastide oversees Bournewood’s hospital operations, ambulatory services, social work, and rehabilitation staff. With more than 25 years of experience working with adults and youth with serious mental illness, substance use disorders, and cognitive disabilities, she brings deep knowledge and insight to hospital operations and programs. Bastide has managed and developed all types of healthcare programs including inpatient, residential, medication-assisted treatment, outpatient, in-home services and wraparound programs. Her previous leadership roles at Lahey Behavioral Health Services, Value Options, Bay Cove Human Services, and Morgan Memorial Goodwill Industries align with Bournewood’s mission and values that individuals with mental health and substance use conditions can recover with access to effective treatment and supports, enabling them to live, work, learn, and participate fully in their communities.

Carmel Heinsohn, M.D.

Chief Medical Officer

A board-certified psychiatrist since 1991, Dr. Heinsohn has led Bournewood’s attending physician staff for 14 years. Her administrative and clinical expertise is wide-ranging with many years of experience as medical director at other area hospitals and director of psychiatric emergency services at the former Boston City Hospital (now the Boston Medical Center). Her role at Bournewood includes oversight of Boston University psychiatric residents and medical students who train at Bournewood Hospital. Dr. Heinsohn is dedicated to reducing and preventing the use of restraint in the treatment milieu, prompting the Department of Mental Health, Bournewood’s licensing authority, to recognize the hospital with exemplary effort. Her deep commitment to dignified and respectful patient care has established Bournewood services and programs as a leader in patient-first approaches to care. In addition to her leadership role, Dr. Heinsohn oversees patient care and treatment and all clinical programs at Bournewood, often providing direct care for patients and consultation to attending psychiatrists throughout the hospital system.

Chief Financial Officer

Michael Gale has led Bournewood’s financial operations since 1990, building a responsive team and infrastructure that supports the organization’s continued growth and expansion through the years. With a keen eye for healthcare trends, Gale has been instrumental at integrating the rapidly changing landscape of healthcare economics with Bournewood’s mission of delivering excellent and compassionate treatment and care. His deep knowledge of federal and state behavioral health policy and political matters guides and assures Bournewood’s position as a solid presence among psychiatric hospitals in Massachusetts.

Tiffany Lamar, RN

Chief Nursing Officer

Tiffany Lamar attended Boston Latin School and went on to Regis College where she received a BSN in nursing, graduating with high honors. She is a master’s-level nurse, earning her advanced degree in nursing education from Walden University where she was inducted in the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. Lamar began her tenure at Bournewood in June 2010 as a staff nurse. During her career, she has worked in hospice care and staff education in nursing under the direction of Bournewood’s longtime nurse educator Carolyn Straub. Prior to serving as chief nursing officer, Tiffany was the director of staff education at Bournewood. She is dedicated to advancing Bournewood’s values of trauma-informed care by providing the best patient care possible and is passionate about encouraging and supporting staff to critically think and provide individualized care and treatment across all of Bournewood’s programs.

Anna Chinappi

Director of Strategic Communications

A communications and community engagement professional in government, private and health care sectors, Anna Chinappi has broad experience in building and sustaining internal and external communications, marketing, and social media strategies for large and small organizations. With 15 years of public service as communications director for the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, Chinappi is committed to raising the voice of individuals and families living with serious mental illness. She is passionate about preventing suicide and was a founding member of the Massachusetts Coalition for Suicide Prevention. Through her work, she advocates for and promotes tolerance and social justice for individuals marginalized by psychiatric and substance use conditions.

James Curran

Director of Admissions and Community Relations

James Curran began his career in the behavioral health field in the 1970s as a mental health counselor at Bournewood. He has the distinction of developing and opening Bournewood’s Admissions office in the early 1980s and is the first and only director of admissions involved in making the hospital’s programs and services known to the community, providers, and referral sources. A US Navy veteran, Curran served our country in Vietnam. With more than four decades helping adults, youth, and families with mental health and substance use conditions, his compassionate, caring, and experienced approach has guided thousands of people in their healing and recovery.

Patrick Pelland

Director of Facility Services

Patrick Pelland came to Bournewood Health Systems in 2000 from Westwood Pembroke Health Systems where he had served since 1984 as facilities manager. He has an extensive background in construction project management, which is invaluable to Bournewood’s continued growth. As the organization’s director of support services, Pelland oversees the operations of the maintenance, housekeeping, transportation, and dietary departments as well as the environment of care and safety for the hospital. His 35+ years of experience and deep knowledge of behavioral health facilities is invaluable in our regulatory and licensing processes with the Joint Commission, Centers for Medicare Services, the Massachusetts Department of Mental Health, and the Department of Public Health.

Paula Berardi

Human Resources Manager

With nearly three decades of human resources experience in behavioral health, Paula Berardi oversees Bournewood’s entire HR operations. In addition to recruitment, workers compensation programs, compensation and benefits management, and compliance with labor and employment laws, she also serves on the Workforce Development Committee to develop the hospital’s comprehensive training program for new staff and ongoing training for current staff ensuring compliance with regulatory agencies. In her role, Berardi assists managers in developing job descriptions and competency assessments as well as assisting with education plans to manage the performance of employees and ensure that they meet the expectations of caring for our patients. She continuously assesses, designs and implements streamlined processes and procedures related to all human resource functions. Prior to coming to Bournewood in 2000, Berardi served as human resource generalist and director of human resources and risk management at Brookside Hospital, a 100-bed inpatient behavioral health facility in New Hampshire for 11 years.
