There are a lot of options for unblocking websites on Windows. My favorite is VPNs. I have spent quite a bit of time in China, so I know what it's like to be banned, blocked, censored, and not being able to access my favorite sites for no reason. Here's some stuff on VPNs for Windows.
Windows is usually divided in Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. Though there are some other versions out there (Windows 95 anyone?), they're either older than you are, or they haven't been born yet (Windows 8). Don't worry about them. Chances are you're on XP, and maybe Win 7. No one knows how Windows 8 is going to go, so we might all still be on XP for the next 5 years.
The reason I mention the separate operating systems is that there's an extra VPN protocol offered at some services that is a potential option for your VPN connection. In fact, it's a good option. It's called SSTP. It's a Microsoft product, and only offered a few VPN services. It uses SSL encryption, which is the same type of encryption you trust for your credit card when you order off of Amazon or other sites online. The standard is 128-bit, which will do fine against most full on hacks to your online data. Many sites even offer the option of a free upgrade to 256-bit encryption which is a bit excessive, but becoming an industry standard as hackers equipment gets more advanced.
SSTP only works with Windows Vista and Windows 7. It will probably work with Windows 8 as well.
If you're on XP, or even on Vista and Win 7, you can still use the other options. For example, PPTP is great for fast browsing and streaming. Has your favorite movie and TV streaming site been blocked because of geo-restriction? Need to change your IP address to access some local sites form your home country? PPTP is great. It's fast and does the trick.
For much better encryption, like the kind mentioned earlier, you can use OpenVPN software. OpenVPN is offered at most VPN services, and is open source software that works on Mac and Linux as well as Windows. T his kind of software is best for people like me, who need to unblock sites in China. If internet censorship is the reason you need to unblock sites on Windows, then OpenVPN is the way to go.
